1. What is greenX?

greenX is a bitrate calculator for DivX 5.1. You can get all settings for DivX with greenX to copy them to the command line interface (CLI) of DivX. The name of the program was "CLZM" but I've changed that name.

I'm still developing greenX. I know there are still some bugs but I am working on about 60 pages of code so it's not always easy to find them.
I have testet the software on Windows XP Pro, Windows 98 (and WinNT). The new version should work on all Windows versions. I

You can always get the latest version here:

http://greenX.veganismus.ch/greenX5.1.exe

If you would like a setup (smaller file!):

http://greenX.veganismus.ch/greenX5.1_setup.exe

Older versions can be found here:

http://greenX.veganismus.ch/old/

2. How to...

...contact:

If you have any comment or suggestions feel free to use my guestbook or send me a mail.

...uninstall:

If you don't want to use greenX:
1. Open greenX
2. Click "clear" (this also clears all entries in the registry)
3. Close greenX without changing any value
4. Delete the file (e.g. greenX.exe)

...install VisualBasic 6 Runtime

It's compiled in VB5 but I you might want to download the new version 6 here. After the installation you should be able to use greenX. (It's Micro$oft so it's just "should")

...be a tester

Its easy to be a beta tester. All you need to do is report the problems you have with greenX. Everybody could do that. I can't test the program on every Version of Windows so I need some people who do that for me. If you have found a bug:

1. Enter "debug" to the notebox (this will enable debugmode)
2. Enter "log" to the notebox (this will enable logging)
3. Do whatever you have to do to cause the problem
4. Sent me a detailed bugreport with the file "log.txt" (it should be in MyDokuments\ or C:\) to bug@veganismus.ch

Note: there are some known issues

...use free aspect ratio:

Enter "FREE" or "0" to the 'aspect ratio' textbox. You can also use the preview to do so.

...use greenX:

Read the DivX guide and you'll know how to use greenX.
But there is one special thing: The algorithm. Set it to '1048' and '-10' to get good results. If you want to use it for an other Encoder than DivX 5.1 use '1024' and '0' so greenX calculates the values as they are supposed to be calculated.
If you need help just click on the white texts to get some info.

...user transparency

You need Windows 2000 or XP.

...calculate the bits per pixel

greenX does it automatically:
'bits per pixel (bps)' = 'bitrate (kbps*1000)' / 'pixel (width*height=px)' * 'framerate (fps)' (Note: k = 1000)

If you want to set a desired value of bits per pixel:
Enter the value to the textbox and hit enter. If the bitrate is "0" greenX will calculate a bitrate that fits. If you already have a bitrate, the resolution will be calculated (don't forget the aspect ratio!)

...get rid of the '3' in 'Psy':

If you have a problem with greenX like a button thats stuck to one value: Download the newest version and click on 'clear'. Restart greenX immediately.

...copy the CLI-string:

Click on 'copy', go to the command line interface (CLI) of DivX, delete the string and paste the new one (Ctrl + V).

...close greenX / the preview:

greenX: Click the 'X' in the upper right corner.
Preview: Double click the black area.

...get the DivX settings (1.7.x):

If you have version 1.7.0 or 1.7.1: DONT USE IT!
Version 1.7.2+ is save. It can get the settings you last made in the DivX GUI.

3. Features/Changes

- Log/MV file
- 3 Modes: Min (bitrate only), Mid (with resolution, no DivX), Max (all)
- Some more hidden stuff: 2 new skins
- Bugfix: The "kBps" is calculated on startup
- Some hidden stuff (also called "eastereggs")
- Transparency (win2k & winXP only)
- You can enter the Megs of audio instead of a bitrate.
- Disksize calc (click on "MB" near filesize)
- Bitrate modulation (2nd pass)
- Resample
(very soft, sharp...)
- French translation (thanks to Fredledingue)
- You get the b/px, height and width at once when typing.
- The b/px is calculated with k = 1000
- Use a user-defined CLI string instead of the automatically generated string
- Enter your desired "bits per pixel" to get the resolution (or bitrate if it is 0 kbps)
- You can now use "cropping" with greenX
- greenX can read the DivX settings. (Please check them yourself - I don't know if they are all right)
- Spinning spinbuttons
- Lots of bugfixes
- No aspect ratio by entering 'FREE'
- More CLI options: -p -pq ## -nf
- Algorithm
- Updated to DivX 5.1
- All values are saved to the registry
- English translation
- Better design
- Every aspect ratio can be used
- 16x16 macroblocks in the preview
- Size of preview is manually adjusable
- Preview of resolution and Aspect ratio

ToDo:
- Max bitrate
- Interlaced instead of progressive
- Profile check. (Can you use the resolution and framerate with this profile?
)

Known Issues
- Problems if the you use a coma "," instead of an point "." (Country Settings)
- No Transparency on Win98

4. CLI rating

This is another special feature of greenX (it's definitely not a bug). It's supposed to tell you if your settings are OK. But a yellow or red CLI doesn't mean your settings are bad - they are just special :-).
Here's how greenX rates your values:

CLI turns red if:

...width and height must me multiple of 4 or 2
...videobitrate < 50
... videobitrate > 8000
...audio = 0
...(videobitrate / audiobitrate) < 2
...(videobitrate / audiobitrate) > 30
...MKI < 1
...MKI > 1000
...framerate < 10
...framerate > 30

The CLI gets all green if all of the following is true:

...(videobitrate / audiobitrate) = 10
...MKI = 200
...bits/px = 0.2 @ "standard"-quality
...the algorithm is '1048' and '-10'

It gets yellow if none of the first conditions is true but some of the second are not.

Please use my guestbook for any suggestions.

5. Virus

All of the files you can download here are free of:

- Viruses (NortonAV says so)
- Adware
- Spyware

I guess PowerCLZM won't work if you don't disable virusprotection in PowerPoint. But there is no reason for using PowerCLZM.
Anyway. The use of greenX is at own risk.
Version 1.7.0 and 1.7.1 are very buggy - don't use 'em!
You might need a newer installation of VB6Runtime (or you will have bluescreens)

6. What does it cost?

It's free. I live in one of the richest countries of the world. And I've got enough money to do all this for free. Unfortunately I'm forced to compulsory labor (because I have a penis), so I don't have much time to fix all the bugs.
Now ask yourself how much you would pay for greenX and spend the money for something good. I'm not speaking about donating an institution just to clear your conscience. An institution is not independent if it collects donations. Now you have to be creative and find a way to spend it on something really good!

Here's a hint (useless for spending the money because veganism is more favorable than eating dead animals, "eggs" or "milk"):
